MacConkey Broth is used for the detection of coliform bacteria in milk and water. Conforms to Harmonized USP/EP/JP Requirements and is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans. A medium recommended by the Harmonized USP/EP/JP for the selective enrichment of Escherichia coli from non-sterile samples. Conforms to Harmonized USP/EP/JP performance specification. Gelatin peptone provides a source of nitrogen, while lactose is a fermentable carbohydrate. Ox bile acts a selective agent inhibiting most Gram-positive organisms and bromocresol purple acts as a pH indicator. A color change from purple to yellow indicates growth of a bile tolerant, lactose fermenting organism such as Escherichia coli. According to the Harmonized USP/EP/JP, MacConkey Broth is used as a selective enrichment broth, with subculture performed onto MacConkey Agar. NEOGEN Hektoen Enteric (HE) Agar, 5 kg
Hektoen Enteric Agar is used for the isolation and differentiation of enteric pathogens. Hektoen Enteric Agar is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans. Hektoen Enteric Agar was developed in 1967 by King and Metzger. Compared to other enteric differentiating media commonly used, Hektoen Enteric Agar increased the isolation rate of Salmonella spp. and Shigella spp. This was accomplished by increasing the carbohydrate and peptone content of the medium in order to counteract the inhibitory effects of bile salts and indicators. King and Metzger formulated a medium that slightly inhibited growth of Salmonella and Shigella, while inhibiting Gram-positive microorganisms. Modified Buffered Peptone Water with Pyruvate (mBPWp) is used for the isolation of Enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC) in a laboratory setting. Modified Buffered Peptone Water with Pyruvate (mBPWp) is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans. Enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC) are recognized as the primary cause of hemorrhagic colitis (HC) or bloody diarrhea. This infection can also lead to hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). Enterohemorrhagic infections are usually food or water borne and have been implicated in undercooked ground beef, raw milk, lunchmeat, water, unpasteurized apple cider, sprouts and vegetables. NEOGEN LB Broth (Miller), 500 g
LB Broth (Miller) is used in molecular genetic studies in a laboratory setting. LB Broth, Miller is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans. LB Broth (Miller) is based on the formula described by Miller. This medium is used for the growth and maintenance of Escherichia coli strains used in molecular microbiology procedures. LB Broth, Miller is a nutritionally rich medium designed for growth of pure cultures of recombinant strains. E. coli is grown to late log phase in LB Medium. Some plasmid vectors replicate to high copy numbers without selective amplification. Some vectors do not replicate so freely and need to be selectively amplified. Chloramphenicol can be added to inhibit host synthesis and prevent replication of the bacterial chromosome. NEOGEN Slanetz and Bartley Agar, 500 g
Slanetz and Bartley Medium is used for the enumeration of enterococci from water samples as described in ISO 7899-2, and is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans. This medium was originally described by Slanetz and Bartley for the enumeration of enterococci from water samples using a membrane filtration technique, but it may also be used as a spread plate for the examination of other sample types. Enterococci reduce tetrazolium chloride to the insoluble red dye formazan, producing colonies which are dark red or maroon on the surface of the membrane or agar. This reaction is not exclusive to enterococci, and the count at this stage should be considered presumptive. MRS Agar is a medium for the enumeration of mesophilic lactic acid bacteria according to ISO 15214:1998, and is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans. MRS Agar was originally developed in 1960 by de Man, Rogosa & Sharpe for the cultivation and enumeration of Lactobacillus spp. from various sources and is intended as a substitute for Tomato Juice Agar. This original formulation has been adapted and adjusted to pH 5.7 according to ISO 15214:1998. Nutrition is provided by enzymatic digest of casein, glucose, meat & yeast extracts whilst polyoxyethylenesorbitan monooleate, magnesium and manganese sulphates act as growth stimulants. Selectivity against streptococci & molds is provided by ammonium citrate and sodium acetate. Dermatophyte Test Medium is used for the selective isolation of dermatophytic fungi and is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans.In 1969, Taplin et al. developed this medium for the isolation and recognition of dermatophytic fungi, the causative agent of ringworm from hair, nails, and skin. Dermatophyte Test Medium is preferred for isolation and early recognition of Microsporum, Trichophyton, and Epidermophyton genera because of a distinct color change in the medium. Rapidly-growing species may produce a complete color change in the medium in 3 days. The slower-growing species will change the indicator in longer time periods.
